Bobcat originated as a company named the Melroe Manufacturing Company. Created in 1947 by EG Melroe, this business launched the Melroe pickup and the harroweeder. After the founder's death in 1955, his sons ran the company and expanded their farm implement business.

In 1958, they met inventors Cyril and Louis Keller. These inventors were known for developing innovative solutions to unique problems experienced by area farmers. One day, a customer commented that it was difficult to clean the second story of his turkey barn, so the inventors created a simple front-end loader with two drive wheels and a rear caster wheel. This invention saw great success at the Minnesota State Fair, leading to the Melroe brothers hiring them on as part of their team.

In 1962, the company unveiled the M440 which was the first loader to use the name Bobcat. Other models were unleashed and used names such as the Big Bob or Mini-Bob. In 2002, the company changed its name to Bobcat. Today, Bobcat heavy machinery is a sought after choice for a variety of industries.
