The beginning of spring signals the start of the busy season for farmers around the country. It’s time to dust off the tractor and put it to work. First, however, it’s important to make sure that all systems are operating as they should. This guide from Bobcat of Erie will help you get your tractor ready for spring.

Fluids Inspection

Cold weather can cause the hydraulic fluid, oil, and transmission fluid in your tractor’s engine to condense. Before you even start your tractor, give these fluids a quick check to ensure that they have no impurities. You should also take the time to check the hoses for leaks and swap out the filters as necessary.

Check Belts and Brakes

When cold weather forces your tractor’s belts to contract, they can become brittle and start to crack. Give your tractor’s belts a quick check to make sure that they won’t snap under pressure. Don’t forget to check your tractor’s brakes as well!

Charge Battery

If you left your tractor’s battery inside the equipment over the winter, there’s a good chance it will be drained come spring. Obviously, you’ll need to recharge the battery. However, if the battery refuses to charge, you’ll need to replace it. Jump starting a tractor is possible, but should only be done as a last resort.

Replace Fuel

If you didn’t put fuel stabilizer in your tractor’s tank before storing it for the winter, anything in the tank will likely be useless by now. Even if you did add stabilizer, give the fuel a quick check. If the fuel appears dark, thick, or full of contaminants, drain your fuel system and refill it.
