Regardless of whether you use your tractor to complete chores on your farm or your job site, you’ll want to perform the pre-operational checks that we’ve mentioned in this guide. These maintenance checks will help keep your machine in good working order, reduce downtime, and keep you and others at your work site safe.

Check the Fuel Level

Before you start your tractor, you’ll want to ensure that you have sufficient fuel in the tank. Top off low gas levels to ensure you don’t have to pause your work midway through it.

Check the Battery

Your tractor’s batteries must be secured, and the battery terminals must be clean, not corroded. A loose connection will make your batteries work harder and drain them quickly. If your battery isn’t able to hold a charge, you’ll want to replace it.

Inspect the Tires

Every day, before you begin your work, inspect the tractor’s tires to see if they have the air pressure as per the manufacturer’s recommendations. You’ll want to adjust the pressure and look for leakage around the valve stem. Remove any objects embedded in the tires and notice if the tread pattern is wearing out evenly.

Replace Faulty Parts

A loose or defective part can not only affect your productivity but become a safety hazard, too. Spend some time examining your tractor to notice loose bolts and nuts and faulty parts like a worn-out belt. Tighten loose parts and replace a piece that is not working to make sure your machine is ready for the rigors at your job site.

Maintain Fluid Levels

To keep your tractor's components lubricated and running smoothly, you’ll need to maintain the required fluid levels as mentioned in your owner’s manual. Check the engine oil, coolant, and hydraulic fluid in your machine and top off low levels. If you find that the oil filter is clogged or there are impurities in the coolant, you’ll want to replace them immediately. While you’re at it, you’ll also want to check underneath the tractor to see if there is a fluid accumulation there, which may mean there is a leak.

Inspect the Operator’s Platform

Once you’ve ensured that your tractor is ready for the day, check to see if the steps are strong enough for you to get on and off the machine safely. Inspect the area around your seat and make sure the seat belt is operable. Also, remember to test the headlights and flashers and replace any burnt-out bulbs
